A six-sided palace lantern in the Luoyang manner: a dark lacquered wood frame carrying deep red silk, with pierced corner fittings and a red silk tassel. Made for festival, hospitality and retail display.
Silk, not paper
The panels are deep red silk over a lacquered wood frame. Silk holds its colour and does not go brittle the way paper does in a dry interior.
Six-sided frame
Six panels, six corner posts, six pierced fittings. The hexagon is the classic palace-lantern form and reads well hung in a row.
Pierced corner fittings
The corner fittings are pierced rather than plain, which is what gives the lantern its shadow pattern when it is lit.
Built for a run
The frame is made to a controlled set of members, so lanterns can be supplied in matched runs for a shopfront or a hotel lobby.

Craft & Materials
Frame and panels
The frame is lacquered wood, built in six panels with a corner post at each joint. The panels are deep red silk, stretched over the frame openings. A red silk tassel hangs from the base.
What is done by hand
The frame joints and the pierced corner fittings are the hand-worked parts. The fittings are cut and finished individually, and the frame is assembled and adjusted by hand so the six panels sit true.
Hanging and use
The lantern is supplied with a hanging fitting. It is made for interior use; keep it out of weather and away from a direct heat source, and dust the silk with a soft brush.
