Tang Sancai Tri-Color Ceramics

Amber, straw and leaf-green glazes running into one another on a low-fired clay body. Sancai — literally "three colours" — is the name given to this Tang dynasty technique, where lead-fluxed glazes were allowed to flow and pool during firing, so that the decoration belongs to the kiln rather than to the painter's brush.

The forms follow the Tang repertoire: horses, camels, court figures, headrests, vessels. Each piece is modelled, dried, glazed and fired in the Luoyang workshops.

Bronze Replicas

Lost-wax casting — in Chinese, 失蜡法 — is the technique behind every complex bronze form. A wax model is built, encased in clay, and fired so the wax runs out; molten bronze then takes its place.

Our bronze line covers ritual vessels, figures, animals and mirrors, finished by hand and patinated to the surface character of excavated pieces. Gilding is available on request.

From Clay and Wax to Finished Piece

The steps below are common to most of our ceramic lines. Metal, wood and lacquer lines differ at the forming stage.

  1. Selecting the Material

Clay bodies, glazes and metal stock are selected per line. Sancai uses a low-fired earthenware body; bronze begins as wax and casting investment.

  2. Forming

Hand-throwing, slab-building, press-moulding or wax modelling — chosen to suit the form, not the other way round.

  3. Glazing or Casting

Glaze is applied by dipping, pouring or brushing. Bronze is cast by the lost-wax method and then chased.

  4. Firing

Kiln temperature and atmosphere determine how sancai glazes flow and where they pool. This is the step that cannot be fully controlled, only guided.

  5. Finishing

Edges dressed, surfaces polished, patina or gilding applied by hand.

  6. Inspection

Each piece is checked before packing. Dimensional and finish tolerances are agreed per order.

How the Craft Is Passed Down

Traditional craft is defined in China's 2017 craft-revival plan as work that is mainly done by hand — shaped to the material, and not replaceable by industrial production. Knowledge like that cannot be written down and read. It travels the way it always has: someone who already practises the craft shows it to someone who does not, and the two work side by side until the hand knows the material.

Every line is graded by hand-work content, material and finish. The grade is stated on the quotation so you know what you are buying.

  3. Low Minimums for Trials

Sample and trial orders are accepted so you can test a line before committing.

  4. Custom Capability

Form, size, glaze, colour, packaging and branding can all be developed to your brief.
