Tang Sancai Tri-Color Ceramics — Wholesale Supplier

Sancai is the low-fired, lead-glazed earthenware of the Tang dynasty, named for the way amber, straw and leaf-green glazes run together in the kiln. Our sancai is made in Luoyang: horses, camels, court figures, headrests and vessels, hand-modelled and kiln-fired.

Three Colours, One Kiln

Tang sancai belongs to the burial culture of the seventh and eighth centuries. Figures of horses, camels and attendants were made for tombs — the horse for the road, the camel for the Silk Road, the official for the court the deceased would join.

The technique is deceptively simple to describe and difficult to control. A lead-fluxed glaze carrying copper and iron oxides is applied to a low-fired body. In the kiln it melts, runs and pools. Green and amber bleed into one another. No two pieces come out the same, and no workshop can fully predict where the colour will go.

That unpredictability is the craft.

Craft Grades

Every line is graded the same way: by how much of the work is done by hand, what it is made of, and how the finish is treated. The grade is stated on your quotation so you know exactly what you are buying.

Pricing depends on size, craft grade and order quantity. Request a quote for your specification.

  1. Hand-built

The form is made by hand throughout — thrown, modelled or built up.

  2. Hand-finished

The form may be press-moulded or cast, but all finishing, carving and decoration is done by hand.

  3. Studio grade

Hand work on a controlled form, with the maker's own glazes or patinas.

  4. Presentation grade

The highest hand-work content in the line, selected for finish and consistency. Intended for gift and collection channels.
